Joanie Clanghorn, who grew up (mostly) in Miss Winslow and Miss Renshaw's School for the Daughters of Missionaries of the Pacific Islands (in Carins, Australia) washes up in Trinity Royal broke and dispirited.
She's a designer of haute couture out of a job, and the job she finds in Trinity is the one Goosey Rossignal left behind when she ran away to Mexico with T.T. Trevithian: model (and book-keeper) in a fur salon. But she's not alone very long. Mill Portman, a star goalie in the NHL, variously described as "the fastest man on skates today" and "the fastest man on two feet," one of those generations of a large and welcoming family, makes some spectacular changes in Joanie's life.
